Practising contentment (online)

Mondays: Apr 12,19,26 – 18.30 to 20.00
with Kadam Tim

For the past year or so, we’ve all encountered situations that we don’t like – perhaps many of them. Right now, we can’t do the things that we normally would like to do – like go on holiday, meet friends and family, hug one another, go to school or hang out in a café.

Yet at the same time as all the restrictions, many people have experienced an inner contentment, an acceptance, almost a relief from what we considered to be normal life. What’s going on? We can’t do what we normally do, and yet somehow, for some people this is OK.

It’s almost as if, by accident, we have discovered the power of contentment.  As Geshe Kelsang Gyatso writes

“Of all forms of wealth, that of contentment is found to be supreme”.

In this month’s Monday classes we will train in meditation and explore how to practise contentment – the skill of keeping a balanced and calm whatever our internal or external conditions may be.

About these online classes

Due to the ongoing health risk situation, there are no in-person classes at the moment. Instead, we will live-stream the classes from the Centre.

To attend a class, please book a ticket below before 18.00 on the day of the class. We will send you a link to the class at the latest 20 minutes before the class starts. We use the Zoom service for our classes.

The classes include teachings, discussion and guided meditations. No previous experience of meditation is needed. Everyone is welcome, buddhist and non-buddhist alike and anyone can benefit from these teachings regardless of nationality, culture, background, gender or age.

Lineage of these instructions

The meditation practices we teach come from an unbroken lineage of instructions that go back to the teachings of Buddha, over 2500 years ago. They are timeless instructions that are very relevant for developing and maintaining a peaceful mind in today’s world.

Teachings for these classes will be drawn from Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche’s books “How to Transform Your Life” and “How to Solve our Human Problems”. Hard copies of both books can be purchased at the Centre. A digital version of the latter is available here available here, and a digital version the former can be download for free here.

Foundation Program is one of the 3 study programs that are offered by Kadampa Centres around the world. It is an on-going, structured program, with a consistent group of people, who week by week study a particular Buddhist text and commentary, building up their knowledge of Buddhism and how to apply it in daily life. At the moment we are studying the book “Joyful Path of Good Fortune” by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso (see below).

Anyone with a strong interest in using Buddhist approach to personal transformation is welcome to enrol on the Foundation Program. There are regular opportunities to join the Study Group throughout the year.

About the book “Joyful Path of Good Fortune”

The book we are studying is “Joyful Path of Good Fortune” by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.

This inspiring book provides a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to understanding and practicing the Buddhist path to enlightenment. It is the condensation of all Buddha’s teachings into one volume.

Through studying this book, we learn how to practice Buddha’s teachings in everyday life – to practically improve our mind, our wisdom and compassion. We can learn how to be happy now, create the causes for future happiness and how we can attain liberation and enlightenment ourself.

The book presents what is known as “Lamrim” – the stages of the path to enlightenment. Through understanding Lamrim we can know where we are on our spiritual journey, and build a storehouse of Buddha’s wisdom in our mind so we always know what we need to practise in any given situation.
